Title: The ICKY BUG Counting Book
Author: Jerry Pallotta
Illustrator: Ralph Masiello
Recommended Grade Level: 2

Common Core Mathematics Standard:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.OA.B.2
Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.OA.C.3
Determine whether a group of objects (up to 20) has an odd or even number of members, e.g., by pairing objects or counting them by 2s; write an equation to express an even number as a sum of two equal addends.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.OA.A.1
Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.1

Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice:
CCSS MATH PRACTICE MP4 Model with mathematics.

Summary:  This book highlights species of bugs and insects page by page totaling up to 26. Interestingly, the book begins with the number 0. Each page vibrantly illustrates either a number of bugs or insects and a brief description about the selected species, as the story progresses the number of the selected insect or bug increase.

Rating:  ***** This book is a great book to expose students to nature, while also having a mathematical concept in mind. Students will learn about bugs and insects while also counting along as a class and individually. It can be used to reinforce knowledge in various subjects. As per math it serves as a tool to help students count, add, subtract etc.

Classroom Ideas:
Students could be paired into groups of bugs or insects and work together in solving addition and subtraction problems. It is also great for grouping strategies.
Example:
-       Students will be asked if your group was the eight bright stinkbugs and ten of the caterpillars group wants to join your group how many will you be in total?
This example could be reversed and used as a subtractive strategy.

  1. Great post Madeline! You have a mentor text that is great to facilitate counting numbers up to 10 and that incorporates addition and sorting of bugs and insects, that will allow students to visually see how the numbers are displayed through animals and it will be great to teach to your class!
